Practical Performance Testing - DS26

Nick covered why performance testing belongs throughout delivery, not just at the end, and walks through how we approach it at PreviousNext.

Overview

Performance testing is one of the most effective ways to build confidence in how a system behaves under real-world conditions. But too often it gets treated as a final checkbox before launch, rather than an ongoing part of delivery.

At DrupalSouth Wellington 2026, Nick Schuch made the case for shifting that thinking, and shared how we put it into practice.

What the talk covered

  • What performance testing is and why it matters
  • Understanding system behaviour under load and uncovering bottlenecks early
  • How PreviousNext approaches performance testing across projects
  • Getting started with k6, our primary tool, across local development, CI pipelines, and production-like environments
  • Turning performance insights into action with open source tools for debugging and diagnosis, from local profiling through to platform-level monitoring and observability

The throughline: treat performance as a continuous discipline, not a last-minute concern.
